The Department of Vocational Disciplines of St Michael's College started functioning in the year 2014 with the sanctioning of the B.Voc courses by the UGC. The B.Voc program is a three-year degree undergraduate course introduced by the UGC to raise the employability and entrepreneurship of the graduates. It is a part of the National Skill Qualification Framework and is financially aided by the UGC. The curriculum has incorporated the requirements of various industries innovatively and flexibly. The department was initially headed by Prof. AB John Joseph after which Dr. Sindhu S Nair was assigned the duty to lead the department. After that, Dr. Antony Kuriakose P. who was also the Nodal Officer took over the post of Head of the Department. The department has two streams under the BVoc program- B.Voc Software Development and BVoc Tourism and Hospitality Management. At present Jithumon K.V is the Head of the Tourism Department,and Akhila Jayapraksh is the Head of the Software Department.A total of 50 students are permissible in each batch.
The Bachelor of Vocation degree programs offered by the Department of Vocational Disciplines aims at providing adequate skills required for a particular trade. The courses offered are different from traditional academic programs as it deals more with application-based studies rather than focusing on only theoretical knowledge
Apart from this, work experience gained by the candidate during the course increases their chances of getting a job.
