The Department of Commerce of St. Michael’s College was started in the year 1999 with a strength of 60 students. The elective paper of the course was Computer Application. In 2019, the elective has been changed from Computer Application to Finance. A major milestone in the history of the department was the introduction of the Master’s Degree Programme in Commerce (M.Com) in the year 2013 and transformed it to a Post Graduate Department. The starting of BBA course in 2020 was another landmark in the trajectory of the department. The college was sanctioned with BBA Logistics Program, which focuses on exploring opportunities for the students in the mounting field of logistics in the industrial sector. The course expanded the scope of the Department of Commerce and elevated it to the status of Department of Commerce and Management. A proposal has been submitted to the University of Kerala in 2020 to upgrade the department to a Research Center in order to promote research in commerce and allied subjects. The initial procedures for the research center were completed and the department will be able to achieve the status of a research center in the near future. At present the Department of Commerce and Management consists of 12 faculties and 450 students. The Department of Commerce and Management offers best academic resources for excellence by way of faculty, infrastructure etc. The department has a vibrant Entrepreneurship Development Club (ED Club) and a very active Commerce and Management Association named Commerce and Management Union for Excellence (COMMUNE). The COMMUNE offers the students a dynamic environment for the overall development of their personalities, interrelationship skills and talents. Additions for Commerce and Management Students (AD4COMS) and Career Endeavour for Commerce and Management Students (CARE4COMS) are the two flagship organizations of the department that target the exhaustive academic and career development of the students. To this end, AD4COMS conducts Add-on-Courses and CARE4COMS organizes career guidance programmes for the students. Diploma in GST Practice (DGSTP), Basic Corporate Accountant, Diploma in Accounting and Tax Management (DATM), Certified Insurance Advisor and Risk Analyst (CIARA) and Diploma in Port Operations and Management are the few Add-on-Courses offered by the Department
